St James Cemetery Project

St James Cemetery Index – find section and lot number and then go to St James Cemetery Inscriptions to find the grave marker inscriptions

History of the Project

This project commenced circa 2000 to record the grave markers in St. James Cemetery before the stones eroded.  The transcribers started in the oldest sections of the cemetery. Sometimes stones could not be found and other stones were buried under several inches of soil; if located, these buried stones were uncovered, recorded and then reburied for safety reasons.

Some stones were illegible or partially illegible so the user should search on partial names or on partial dates. For example, some names are recorded as [ ]artwright and some dates as 185[ ] or 18[  ]4.

How to use this data

The St James Cemetery Index allows you to search by surname, forename, dates to find the Section and Lot Number. The user should use the Section and Lot Number to search the St James Cemetery Inscriptions to see all the stones in that particular lot; perhaps a whole family will be displayed allowing the user to confirm whether this is the correct family.

The transcriptions show the grave marker at one point in time. No effort has been made to update the data with deaths that occurred after the stone was transcribed. Transcription ended in 2017.

In the Surname and Forename fields of the St James Cemetery Index, we have occasionally completed the name, although the names may have been unclear on the gravestone due to erosion. Please confirm the names by using St James Cemetery Inscriptions page.
